The Best Places to Buy Flower Seeds

While you’re likely to find at least a handful of cut flower seed packets for sale at your local garden center, the options tend to be limited to basic varieties with simple colors and limited textures. The following online suppliers are our team’s favorites and where we shop for the flowers that bloom from spring through fall!

Best Selection and Best Overall ~ Johnny’s Seeds

Johnny’s Seeds is the best known seed suppliers thanks to their large selection of cutting varieties, fair prices, option to purchase wholesale quantities (though they offer single small packets, too), and fast shipping. We probably purchase more seeds from Johnny’s than anywhere else, and I especially like their selection of snapdragons, ornamental herbs, delphinium, larkspur, and ornamental grasses.

Best for Specialty Varieties and Sweet Peas ~ The Farmhouse Flower Farm

The Farmhouse Flower Farm is a great spot for sought-after, delicate varieties; I’ve purchased Apple of Peru, Mignonette, Silene, and a few varieties of Cress here, all of which germinated successfully. Known for their incredible selection of sweet peas (in every romantic shade imaginable), seed from this family-owned farm tend to sell out quickly, so be sure to sign up for their email newsletters to stay up to date on restocks. And while you’re placing an order, consider picking up owner Marryn Mathis’ book, “Sweet Pea School”. It’s one of my favorites!

Best Local and Family-Owned Supplier ~ Bucktown Seed Co.

This family-owned seed company in Chester County, PA offers a wide selection, including plenty of edible flowers too! They’re also home to my favorite gifts for flower lovers, including their curated selection of summer-blooming flower varieties, their Freshly Cut Blooms kit. I also really love Edible Petals, a hand-selected assortment of seeds that will grow into edible varieties for garnishing cocktails, cheeseboards, and cakes! Bucktown Seed Co. also has lots of veggies, including certified organic and certified naturally grown options.

Best for “Hard to Find” Varieties ~ Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds aka Rare Seeds

This online seed supplier is known for their selection of seeds that you can’t seem to find anyplace else, and they’re where we pick up most of our amaranth, yarrow, celosia, and edible varieties. Baker Creek has lots of funky colors (be sure to check out their sunflowers!) too. Their website offers helpful growing guides, and unlike most seed suppliers, they feature reviews publicly on their website, so you can pick up ideas and growing suggestions from other gardeners. They’re a great source for veggies, too.

Best for Native and Pollinator-Friendly Varieties ~ American Meadows

My favorite source for native and pollinator-friendly seeds, American Meadows allows you to shop by region to find the best selection of low-maintenance native wildflowers for your backyard. They sell many of their seed mixes in larger quantities for gardeners that are looking to convert portions of their yard into flower-filled meadowscapes, but you can purchase single variety packets, too. The bees will thank you!

Best Breeder (Specialty Zinnias) ~ Dawn Creek Farm

If you’re looking to grow one of the most popular (and easiest!) cut flowers, zinnias, then it’s worth taking a look at Dawn Creek’s options. The creamy, dreamy shades of their blush, beige, and butter yellow zinnias were all bred with love at their family farm over the course of many years. The limited quantity seeds are sold in their annual fundraiser and while the prices are higher than average, we promise that they will bloom into the most beautiful zinnias you’ve ever seen!

Best for Gifting ~ Renee’s Garden

Of all the suppliers listed here, seeds from Renee’s Garden are the only ones you’re likely to find in a garden center. You’ll recognize their distinctive seed packets (because they’re so dang pretty!) and their “Scatter Garden” seed mixes, often sold in tins, make a gorgeous gift for flower-loving friends.
