Our Favorite Tulip Bulb Suppliers

Reserve your bulbs early in the summer months for the prettiest April and May gardens

It might feel a little unusual to think about next spring’s flowers already, but flower farmers and tulip lovers can all agree that ordering your tulip (and other fall-planted) bulbs earlier in the summer months is the best way to ensure access to the most coveted varieties, like specialty double tulips in romantic or unusual shades. The especially coveted popular varieties - like “Belle Epoque” - sell out quickly, so it’s a great idea to order your favorite tulips now, though suppliers typically won’t actually ship them until later in the season. Gardeners can expect to receive their bulbs in the mail in late September or October, conveniently in time to plant in late October or November here in Greater Philadelphia.

There are plenty of places to buy tulips, and the options can feel overwhelming. Below, I’ve narrowed down my five favorite retailers that sell tulip bulbs online, as well as a handful of my favorite varieties that new growers may wish to try. (We always encourage growers to purchase online instead of in big box retailers, as the quality tends to be significantly higher - not to mention a tremendously greater selection!)

Best for Quality and Selection

Brent and Becky’s Bulbs and John Scheepers are two family-run businesses that have been supplying bulbs for generations. Both offer a wide selection and high quality with great customer service, but be warned that Brent and Becky’s, especially, sells out extremely early in the season. I recommend ordering their catalogue for an easy and beautiful way to browse their full selection; my favorite tulip of all time, “Copper Image,” is available at both shops.

Best Small Business Supplier

Hitchfoot Farm is a small homestead in Maine that offers gorgeous varieties and top-quality bulbs. My personal favorite from them is “Greenland,” a playful pink and green single tulip that reflexes like a dream —it looks otherworldly! They’re also selling Iris’ starting in August, and I can’t wait to check them out, too. Be sure to follow them on Instagram @hitchfootfarm for shop updates.

Best for Large Orders and Value

Colorblends offers value pricing for high quantities, and features a lot of brighter, traditional colors and beautiful mixes perfect for larger landscaping projects. “Double Sugar” and “Finola” are two of my favorite varieties that they offer.

Dutch Grown is another popular choice for larger-scale growers, as they offer significant discounts at higher quantities. They have a wide selection and “Lilac Wonder,” “Amazing Parrot,” and “Perfect Wedding” are three unique picks that I’ve purchased from them in the past.
